Grays Harbor 2020:
Building a Sustainable Grays Harbor
New! Grays Harbor 2020 Action Plan Open for Public Review
After months of reviewing, organizing and researching thousands of community ideas, the Grays Harbor 2020 Task Force and Anchor Teams have assembled a draft Action Plan for public review. The Action Plan, when finalized, will serve as a community-generated road map to “a more sustainable Grays Harbor.” Proposed strategies and actions are sorted into five anchor concepts – the fundamental components of a complete, healthy and sustainable Grays Harbor. They include:
- Investing in State-of-the-Art Infrastructure and Governance Systems
- Enhancing and Promoting Our Signature Spaces and Places
- Preserving and Capitalizing on Our Unparalleled Environmental Assets
- Fostering Sustained Growth through a Diversified and Progressive Economy
- Extending Personal Opportunity to All through Strategic Social Investments
Some of the plan proposals call for an extension or amplification of current efforts. Others represent brand-new thinking. Overall, the mix of ideas reflect the community’s desire to build on past successes, while also paving a path forward to new and sustained achievement.
What's Next?
The Grays Harbor 2020 Task Force will hold two public forums in January to introduce proposed strategies and actions and invite community members to prioritize their favorite ideas. An implementation timeline will be created following public review, with the most popular ideas slated to begin as soon as possible. The Task Force will recruit a variety of organizations, throughout the county, to “adopt” and implement one or more actions beginning in early 2009.
Public forums will be held in early 2009. Check your local newspaper or this website for dates.

What Is Grays Harbor 2020?
Grays Harbor 2020 is both a process and a product; a road map to our future destination. Over the next year, the greater community will be asked to participate in an initiative to ensure the long-term vitality of our Grays Harbor County, our home.
What do you like about Grays Harbor now that you hope to be able to say is still true in 20 years? What would you like to be able to say is different, better or simply more sustainable in the future? What kind of infrastructure, economy, social networks, housing stock and educational system do we want to deliver to our children? How will our priorities mesh with those of future generations? Are we focusing on the right things? These are but a few of the questions to be posed and addressed through Grays Harbor 2020.
In the end, Grays Harbor 2020 will describe where we want to go as a community, what we need to do to get there, and who is willing and able to help steer the ship. Grays Harbor 2020 will be developed by and for the people who live, work and play here; our own guide to a sustainable, prosperous and secure future. See Grays Harbor 2020’s working definition of “sustainable” here.
